The Sanja Matsuri is one of three major Shinto festivals in Tokyo. It is considered to be the most colourful and he live liest. The festival is organised in honour of Hinokuma Hamanari, HinokumaTakenari and Hajino Nakatomo, the three men who founded the Senso-ji, the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo. Every year this festival attracts 2 million visitors.
The most famous parades at the festival offer a rare sight of the transportation of three mikoshi (divine palanquins) through the city, music and traditional dances.
Another equally exceptional event is the Geishas'parade which takes place on Saturday afternoon (by booking).
